Our communities face critical issues that businesses and nonprofits help address from basic needs (food, clothing, housing, healthcare) to economic development (jobs, workforce development, vocational rehabilitation), intervention (child abuse and neglect, substance abuse, domestic violence, crime prevention), and rehabilitation (ex-offender community re-entry, family unification). While this is not an exhaustive list, it is clear that not one of these issues exists in isolation. This is where you come in. Your small business, corporation, or nonprofit, in some way, positively impacts at least one of these community concerns.
As a result, you (business or nonprofit) must be prepared to take advantage of opportunities that will help your business so you can strengthen your community. Key to this is writing, whether it is responding to a business opportunity, a request for proposal, preparing a business plan, requesting a grant, creating marketing collatoral, or developing a web presence. According to the National Commission on Writing, the ability to write well has never been more important. Unfortunately, estimates reveal that employers spend billions annually correcting writing deficiencies. A significant portion of firms (about one-third) report that one-third or fewer of their employees, both current and new, possess the writing skills companies value. Writing deficiencies may be even more pronounced elsewhere in the broader private sector, particularly among employees of small- and medium-sized businesses. "In most cases, writing ability could be your ticket in . . . or it could be your ticket out," said one business leader. It appears that remedying deficiencies in writing may cost American firms as much as $3.1 billion annually.
